Curtis Patterson and Bruce Huebner are forging a new path for the koto and shakuhachi, creating an honest and fresh sound that defies expectations. Drawing on over forty years of study, performance, and teaching in Japan, they present a repertoire that seamlessly stretches from classical honkyoku and jiuta to jazz, featuring new works and fresh arrangements along with well known koto/shakuhachi standards.
At times improvisational, their music flows freely, deeply rooted in the past while attuned to the present. It offers a compelling, modern outlook for these ancient instruments—sometimes evoking the mountains and rivers of Japan, and at other times offering a simple reflection on daily life.
カーティス・パターソンとブルース・ヒューブナーは、箏と尺八の新たな道を切り拓き、人々の予想を覆す、誠実かつ斬新な音世界を創り出しています。日本での40年以上にわたる研鑽、演奏、指導の経験を活かし、彼らは古典的な本曲や地唄からジャズに至るまで、シームレスに広がるレパートリーを披露します。その中には、箏と尺八の定番曲に加え、新作や斬新なアレンジ作品も含まれています。
時に即興的な要素も交えつつ、彼らの音楽は自由に流れ、過去に深く根ざしながらも現代の感性に寄り添っている。それは、これらの古楽器に魅力的な現代的な展望をもたらし、時には日本の山河を想起させ、また時には日常生活への素朴な思索を提示する。
